A few summers ago I was peering suspiciously out my window at some shady vehicle outside my house, which of course turned out to be the street view camera truck:

Oh self, I thought, that's not a good look for a lady (which is now on the internet forever).

Then I found this vintage Dior ad and realized it actually is a super good look.

Then I found those exact vintage Dior glasses frames. I'm not lying.

I like that ad because it reminds me of Rear Window, and may be referencing that thing Hitchcock had for auxiliary female characters wearing glasses.

My favorite one of these, which I couldn't find a picture of, is in North by Northwest when he climbs into a hospital room and the woman inside is scared at first, then puts her glasses on and wants him to stay. Because, I guess he's handsome? He's like, this gross orange color in that movie if you ask me.

I've read some good books and some really terrible books, lately. It drives me crazy that some terrible books are just allowed out into the world. After all the things I've talked myself out of doing, some idiot just writes a terrible book - or worse, someone who's not an idiot allows themselves to write a book that they probably know they shouldn't have. There are terrible movies too, but that's different because it's usually a mania or a delusion that involves a whole group of people. Oh god, I watched this terrible movie, even though I knew I shouldn't have, that was based on a really great book.

Right now I might have to allow myself to do some terrible things, or else I risk not being able to do anything at all.

Since my computer died I've been going through dusty stacks of cd's looking for stuff to re-upload, and finding all kinds of music I forgot I liked. Bands like The Gerbils? And The Black Heart Procession? That I listened to alllll the time in 2001? It's giving me feelings somewhere between nostalgia and indigestion.

Everyone knows that a french manicure is what separates ladies from you-know-whats.
They are a brilliant evolutionary ruse to trick potential mates into thinking that your fingernails are glamorous and clean.

One time on the bus I saw a woman wearing sandals with a french pedicure, (bear with me) featuring tips painted a deep crimson instead of white, and I mean the color of dried blood. It was all I could do to maintain my sanity.

Someday I will be to french manicures what Louis Wain was to cats.

The last time I was at a beauty-supply store I perused the peroxide aisle singing this song I had just made up:

I'm trying to figure out what I want in the coming months in the most elemental fashion, so that it can be accepted by the simplest part of my brain. I once read that your subconscious can't assimilate negative statements as facts, so you have to tell your brain what you want in the most straightforward positive way possible. I wonder if that's true or if I was reading the Hippie Bullshit Your Relatives Forward You Digest. Anyway, what I'm thinking about is "more gorgeous", and for some reason my brain associates this phrase with horseradish-infused vodka, and I can't stop thinking about it.

I don't even like vodka. But I like this stuff. I went to a cafe in New York that makes their own, and the waiters are handsome.

I also like the fact that you can hallucinate dancing horses if you tape ping-pong balls over your eyes and listen to static on the radio. I wish I had known this when I was 13 or so.

I bought this giant skull mug on my lunch break today,

and told my coworker I was going to fill it with horseradish vodka, and then I was really going to tell everybody what's what. It was pretty funny because there's no amount of anything in the world that would motivate either of us to tell anyone what's what, because we're constitutionally opposed to things like that.

I went on vacation. Then I came back and my computer had commited suicide in my absence. I guess we had a complicated relationship, but this just beyond the limit. I backed up some things now and then, but not enough. It's so creepy how we (ok, I) use these fallible machines as secondary brains or something and you put your whole life on it. If my hard drive was a house the Collyer brothers would live there. I had stuff like this collection of screen caps of Agent Scully just pointing a flashlight at different things. You know, "art reference", the umbrella term I use to explain the massive dunes of bizarre effluvia that I can't stop myself from building around me. I lost a lot of music and personal photos too but I can't even think about it.

The "Fashion Police" section of US Weekly
The song "Lady in Red"
Diaper commercials
Also commercials that involve women sitting around on patios talking about things I would literally rather die than care about, like yogurt or candles.

This morning, my friend Joe very aptly compared the obsessive news-checking we are sure to indulge in later as shaking a pregnancy test in order to make the lines show up faster. See, my friends and I went trick-or-treating with this kid we know, which is, I discovered, one of the most fun things you can do in this life. David Starr Jordan, president of Stanford University, published an article in Popular Science Monthly describing the discovery of a new form of photography that he called Sympsychography. Starr explained that it allowed invisible brain waves to be made visible on a photographic plate -- similar to the way in which invisible X rays produce an image on a photographic plate.

The first test of sympsychography, Starr wrote, had been conducted by Cameron Lee, who burned an image of a cat onto a photographic plate merely by thinking of a cat. The Astral Camera Club, which met on April 1, then took the concept one step further. Seven of its members simultaneously concentrated their minds on a photographic plate while thinking of a cat. What emerged was not one man's image of a cat, but rather a joint "impression of ultimate feline reality." The resulting picture (shown here) was reproduced in the article.

Starr wrote, "it will be noticed that this picture is unmistakably one of a cat. But it is a cat in its real essence, the type cat as distinguished from human impressions of individual cats."

Jordan thought the readers of Popular Science Monthly would immediately recognize his article as a joke. Instead he received numerous letters from people who had taken the article at face value. One clergyman even confided to Starr that he had prepared six sermons on "the Lesson of the Sympsychograph."

Last night I was visiting some friends who have a whole lot of wonderfully wrong shit in their house. Among this was one of the most terrifying things I have ever seen in my life, the Linda Evans Rejuvenique Facial Kit - an electrified plastic, um, face mask that plugs into a vile 1950's-looking controller/battery via a phone jack (?) and comes with a special pre-electrocution cooling gel so you don't burn holes in your face (I'm guessing).

I literally gasped in horror when I opened the box and saw it. The immediate question, of course is "WHY?", which I still don't have the answer to. All I know is:
1. It is like doing eight sit-ups a second, but for your face, and
2. It really, really doesn't feel good (secondhand information).
3. Jason Voorhees is an unstoppable killing machine.

My curiousity led to the discovery of the suspiciously pro-Linda Evans, anti-Joan Collins slant of her wikipedia page. I suspect Ramtha is involved:

"In 2006 Evans starred in Legends opposite former Dynasty rival, Joan Collins.

Evans was wary of joining her old co-star on stage for a long tour and, indeed, Collins and Evans did not get along during the production. According to Collins, who wrote about their experience on the road in the U.K. Daily Mail, Collins claimed that Evans never reciprocated party invites during "Dynasty", and kept her distance from Collins during the series' run; Collins asserts that she agreed for the producers to approach Evans for "Legends" against her better judgment (as Evans had never acted on stage before) and further said that Evans was too physical during their on-stage stunts during Legends. In fact, Evans's reputation as a professional is well-documented; in 1992, even caustic comedienne Joan Rivers said of Linda Evans that Evans "is one of the only people in the business I've never heard anything negative about."

Evans was at one point a follower of Ramtha's School of Enlightenment."

One positive thing I would like to share about Linda Evans is that her uncannily misguided concept of "rejuvenation" is indirectly responsible not only for a great deal of amusement for me personally, but also this amazing video:

Today I went to visit some friends who were having a yard sale. They live in an interesting neighborhood and some real characters came by to look at stuff. Some super cute children also. This one guy drove his weird little motorbike all the way up the driveway and yelled over the idling engine instead of turning it off.
"Hey how much for your flops?" he called over at me (I was sitting in a chair and looked like I was running the place, I guess)
"Excuse me?" I asked.
He held up a pair of flip-flops. "How much for your flips?" he asked again.

Jesus, what kind of person can't just say "flip-flops"? Or, you know, "these shoes"?

He finally turned off the bike so he could complain about how his girlfriend was a bitch, even though he was buying her these goddamn flip-flops. Which were nice, you know? They were a dollar. And she was probably going yell at him because they were too big, because apparenly she is on her period like all the time.
